When I was looking for books and other resources for the website, I came across this gem, "Lifetimes" that I had to buy for my little man. It's probably a little early (he's only 1.5 years), but I wanted to try to get this topic (among others) out in the open from an early age. I guess I just figured that if the discussion was normal now, then it would be so much easier for him when he does have to deal with the death of our cat, or a grandparent, or anyone or -thing else. When I lost my brother back in 2004, it was a challenge. Here, I have this incredible loss, this incredible sadness, and family full of believers who couldn't do anything to help me through my journey of grief. I had to do it all on my own. Anyway, the book came in the mail yesterday so, before work today, I sat down to give it a read. Deep-down, I guess I was looking for something poetic, and the book is not that. But, it does do a wonderful job explaining how every life has a beginning and end, and how different lifetimes are for different living things. No religion, no fear...although it does say something along the lines of "that may be sad," to quickly address feelings, but it doesn't harp on feelings. I'm really glad I purchased the book. As mentioned, it leaves out the emotional bit, so there's still some explaining to do when the time comes. Whether you accept lifetimes or not, you still have some grieving to do when someone special exits your life forever.
